Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hope Dealer, ala Jesus & Saint Paul

The Jewish Carpenter from Nazareth, Jesus, was explicit when he said the most important things are to love God and to love each other.  The exemplar of love goes on to say that we will be identified and known as His, (think, followers of The Way, followers of Jesus, CHRISTIANS), by our love. The one-time assassinator of Christians turned staunch Jesus advocate, Saint Paul, adds to that message with his direction to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent & praiseworthy. Saint Paul encouraged us to celebrate the goodness of our uniqueness.  He implored us to allow these individual specialties to unite us through commonality resulting in a better whole and not seeing differences as negatives that divide.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. followed in those same footsteps of the Hope Dealers Jesus and Paul that preceded him, using their foundational words and actions to do his part to significantly impact his world in his time.  He echoed the God-man and the saints in his desire for mutual love and respect among people, in his desire for a world in which “little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”

May we see each other as intended, as unique, loved and special, as those made in the image of the artist that created the universe.  As we celebrate this special day in which we remember the Hope Dealer Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let us not only hear but employ his words of freedom, justice and love.
